[Teacher] Vaclav Kunes


Born in Prague, Czech Republic, May 19th 1975.
After finishing the Dance Conservatory in Prague in 1993 he joined the Nederlands Dans Theater 2. In 1998 he joined the main group, NDT 1 under the direction of Jiri Kylian. There he remained until 2004. During his years with NDT he has worked with many choreographers. Mainly with Jiri Kylian, Ohad¡¡Naharin, William Forsythe, Paul Lightfoot, Mats Ek, Nacho Duato, Johan Inger, Andre Gingras, Hans van Manen and many others. He has performed in many countries in Europe, Asia, North and South America, Africa and Australia.
In 2004 he decided to continue as a freelance dancer and choreographer. As a dancer he has been working, among others, with Saburo Teshigawara, with whom he
created several pieces for the New National Theater in Tokyo 2005 & 2006. For one of his works he has been nominated for the Dancer of the Year 2005 award in Cannes, France.
He is frequently invited to perform at various gala performances in Europe (Roberto Bolle & friends), USA and Japan (in 2005 he performed at the opening ceremony of the Isaamu Noguchi¡¯s Moerenuma Park in Sapporo). Kunes is recently performing in a new creation by J. Kylian and M. Schumacher Last Touch First, a Holland Dance Festival production.For the Finnish Film Foundation he has played and danced the role of young Nijinsky in the movie Vaslav Nijinsky Invisible Power.Since 2004 he is also active as an assistant to Mr. J. Kylian, setting his pieces on other companies - Basel Ballet, Finnish National Ballet, Czech National Ballet, Poland National Ballet, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Ballet of La Scala in Milano.
As a choreographer Kunes has created several works for Nederlands Dans Theater 2, Copenhagen International Ballet, Laterna Magica company in Prague, the Korzo Theater in The Hague (Dutch national tour DansClick in 2008) and for the Station Zuid production house in Holland (Dutch national tour in 2009 with full length piece Ghost Note). In 2010 he created a new work for the Opera National de Bordeaux.
Temporary Condition and staged his Small Hour with the Dominic Walsh Dance Theater in Houston, Texas. In 2007 he co-founded a dance and production unit 420PEOPLE in Prague, his home town, where he assumes the position of an artistic director. First creation for this group, Small Hour, has gained a several nominations and in 2008 he received an Award by the Theater Institute in the Czech Republic. His second creation for 420PEOPLE in, Golden Crock, received a nomination for the biggest award given in the Czech Republic to the choreographer, the Sazka award. As a coproduction of 420PEOPLE and the dutch Korzo Theater, he created a full evening piece A Small hour ago, premiered at the Holland Dance Festival in The Hague on November 2009.
